PILEP+90

PILEP + 90 will be led by the CIEN Foundation and will involve researchers from five different institutions in Spain, Portugal and Denmark. The scientific program has a marked interdisciplinary focus throughout the three research projects that comprise it:

  • "Factors associated with healthy and pathological ageing in a sample of people over 90 years of age in the city of Madrid (MADRID + 90)", led by Dr. Miguel Ángel Fernández Blázquez, head of the Department of Neuropsychology of the CIEN Foundation.
  • "Factors associated with healthy and pathological ageing in a sample of people over 90 years of age in the Braga region (BRAGA + 90)", led by Dr. Nadine Correia Santos of the University of Minho.
  • "Application of data mining techniques for the identification of factors of healthy and pathological ageing (ImageH)", led by Dr. Jaime Gómez Ramírez of the Neuroimaging Department of the CIEN Foundation.

The purpose of PILEP + 90 is double. On the one hand, determine what individual factors of lifestyle are associated with healthy ageing. On the other, to know what risk factors are associated with the appearance of various diseases associated with age and, especially, Alzheimer's type dementia. For this, the demographic, clinical, cognitive and cerebral profile of two samples of people over 90 years of age from two different but complementary sociocultural realities will be studied and characterized: the city of Madrid and the area of influence of Braga. In addition, the analysis of the data obtained in PILEP + 90 will benefit from the availability of the information generated within the framework of the Vallecas Project, a longitudinal investigation developed by the CIEN Foundation for the early detection of Alzheimer's disease. Thanks to the combination and exploitation through automatic learning techniques of the demographic, lifestyle, clinical, cognitive and neuroimaging data collected in the study, it is expected that PILEP + 90 will help to delay the effects of cognitive ageing, to decrease the risk of developing a dementia, to promote the level of functional independence and to increase the quality of life of all the elderly.

RESEARCH PROGRAM IN LONGEVIDAD SPAIN-PORTUGAL +90 (PILEP + 90)

PILEP + 90 is a research project designed to examine the role of the biological and environmental determinants associated with longevity and, more specifically, the dementia-free longevity. For this the study will analyze different variables associated with cognition, health, lifestyles and brain structure in two samples of people over 90 years old from Madrid and Braga.

The specific objectives of PILEP + 90 can be summarized in the following points:

- Identify factors associated with longevity in a cross-cultural study with people over 90 years of age.

- Determine the prevalence rates of dementia in nonagenarians and centenarians according to their demographic and biological characteristics.

- Examine the sociodemographic profile, current health status, medical history and lifestyle factors associated with this population group.

- Validate a set of instruments for clinical, cognitive and functional evaluation in long-lived people for their telephone and face-to-face application.

- Relate cognition in this age group with the parameters of cerebral neuroimaging.

- Identify modifiable risk factors that reduce the prevalence of dementia and increase the quality of life of older people.

- Promote healthy habits in the rest of the population to achieve an ageing free of dementia.
