III Workshop on Healthy Ageing "Living well, ageing better" is held with a large number of attendees

Within the framework of the CENIE Project (0348_CIE_6_E) - International Centre on Ageing, which is part of the INTERREG V A SPAIN-PORTUGAL (POCTEP) 2014-2020 cooperation programme, the III Healthy Ageing Conference "Living well, ageing better" was held on 16 January in the Grand Auditorium of the Gambelas Campus of the University of the Algarve, aimed at the general public, informal carers and technicians in the region.

The main objectives of this project are to raise awareness in society and to generate a change of attitude that promotes ageing as a source of opportunities and not as a threat. This consortium between several Portuguese and Spanish institutions aims to promote research, innovation and development to address the phenomenon of population ageing as an opportunity for economic and social development, fostering the creation of new researchers and new professional profiles, specialised in the area of ageing.

More than 400 participants (330 senior users and 125 technicians) from institutions such as Santas Casas da Misericórdia, Red Cross, Senior Universities, City Councils, Parish Councils, ARS Algarve and other IPSS from 11 municipalities in the region (Loulé, Lagos, S. Brás de Alportel, Monchique, Vila do Bispo, Olhão, Faro, Tavira, Alcoutim, Aljezur, Albufeir, Albufeir) came to UAlg to attend. The opening session was attended by Paulo Águas, Rector of the University of Algarve, Rogério Bacalhau, Mayor of Faro, and Nídia Braz, UAlg professor and representative of the organising committee of the Conference. Sandra Pais, coordinator of the CENIE Project of the University of Algarve, was present at the end of the conference.

The III Workshop "Living well, ageing better" had as its main objective to discuss and promote quality of life in the ageing process and aimed to stimulate a reflection on successful ageing. There were lectures on the most diverse topics of active ageing, from the importance of physical activity, the warning signs of a stroke, basic care and warning signs for eyesight, nutrition, medication, dementia prevention, institutionalisation and tourism. Sandra Pais presented the different projects that are being carried out in the Algarve for active ageing and made a very positive balance and with a great impact of the CENIE project on the elderly and the institutions of the Algarve.
