CENIE defines itself as a knowledge hub and is an organization promoted by the General Foundation of the University of Salamanca, which cooperates with the Economic and Social Councils of Spain and Portugal, together with the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança.

CENIE is a response to a socio-demographic reality that has to face new challenges and opportunities, for this purpose it promotes research programs, promotes actions that favor the change of perception in the relationship between age and economy, carrying out, among other actions, training and informative programs.

It is time to change the attitude towards aging and instead of improvising, to promote strategies on how to better optimize the additional decades of life that humanity has achieved with its advances. In this way, we can help people to live longer, more active and independent lives, and also contribute to making better use of the opportunities inherent in a rapidly changing society.

The unceasing growth of life expectancy in the world is one of the most relevant achievements of our contemporaneity, as transforming as it is full of opportunities and new challenges. Scientific advances, health care, improvements in nutrition and hygiene, together with the population's growing interest in its health, and the implementation of appropriate policies, justify the achievement of such a significant milestone.

We have managed to extend people's lives as never before in our long civilization. Now it is essential that this happy extension be accompanied by everything that makes possible a more active, healthy, participatory and prosperous existence, so that this final stage becomes a true golden age.

This is the aim of CENIE's work. And it does so at a time when this authentic demographic revolution is beginning to become a proven and universal reality. It is the precise time in which to investigate, experiment, disseminate and reach consensus on all the actions necessary to achieve the aforementioned goal. With the firm conviction of its necessity. And of its urgency.

A faithful exponent of what the present is, and of what the immediate future will bring, the CENIE is constituted:

As an open, dynamic project, in a continuous process of learning and improvement;
Within a global reality, where communication and exchange of experiences on better longevity will always be the key to obtain optimal results; in permanent dialogue with the world, promoting the meeting between the most relevant institutions and people, leaders in CENIE's field of action;
Combining and favoring the generation of research on aging and longevity and, at the same time, its implementation, together with a permanent evaluation process;
Forging essential alliances between the scientific, academic, economic, educational, cultural, political, media and social spheres;
Identifying the strengths and extraordinary opportunities that population longevity offers;
Establishing a continuous and direct communication with the society to which it is addressed, thus collaborating to a realistic, unprejudiced, positive and integrating perception of what longevity means;
And generating reflection, analysis, design and implementation of as many strategies, proposals and measures as necessary to achieve its stimulating purpose.

The Management Committee of the Interreg VI A Spain - Portugal Cooperation Program (POCTEP) 2021-2027, financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), at its meeting of 28/09/2023, agreed to grant ERDF assistance of 2,716,021.95 euros to the New Long-Lived Societies project (0137_NSL_6_E).

Purpose

To anticipate, develop, cooperate and work on the studies and analyses necessary to respond to the opportunities and challenges that the extension of the life cycle entails, from a perspective that allows us to understand, know and comprehend the phenomenon of long-lived societies.
