When the Algorithm Looks at You: Decisions in Longevity

Who interprets our data when we grow old?

In long-lived societies, data has become a new language of power. Not only because there is more information about our health, our habits, or our movements, but because more and more decisions are based on that information. Sometimes to help us. Sometimes to classify us. Sometimes to exclude us without saying so.

The question is no longer whether algorithms will arrive in longevity: they are already here. The question is another one, more delicate and deeply political: who interprets our data when we age, and by what criteria do they decide?

An Everyday Scene

Imagine a simple situation. You apply for a dependency benefit. You fill out a form. You submit reports. The system crosses variables: age, level of autonomy, health history, income, family situation, perhaps even place of residence. From there, it generates a priority: “high,” “medium,” or “low.” No one explains why. Only the decision arrives.

None of this sounds like science fiction. It sounds like modern administration. And it is. The difference is that, in many cases, the decision is no longer only human: it is hybrid. A model suggests, prioritizes, or scores. And then someone signs. Or sometimes no signature is even needed: the system decides by default.

From Data to Judgment

A data point seems innocent: a step count, a lab result, a purchase history, a request for help, a medical visit. But as soon as that data enters a system, it begins to turn into judgment. It is compared with patterns, crossed with databases, translated into “risk,” “probability,” “priority.”

In longevity, that translation has real consequences. It can mean early access to a preventive intervention… or a delay. It can mean a follow-up call… or silence. It can mean that the system looks at you with care… or looks at you with suspicion.

Data does not decide by itself. Interpretation decides. And interpretation, many times, is no longer done by a person.

Algorithms That Decide Without a Face

Algorithms are not neutral entities: they are rules. And rules always reflect values, assumptions, and priorities. In areas such as health, social services, employment, or credit, more and more systems use predictive models to allocate resources, detect profiles, or anticipate scenarios.

That can be useful. It can help detect fragility before it becomes evident, personalize prevention, or organize waiting lists with consistent criteria. But it can also be dangerous if it turns life into a score and old age into a label.

The risk is not that calculation exists; the risk is that it imposes itself as unquestionable truth.

In long-lived societies, the algorithm can become a new intermediary between the person and their citizenship: it decides what deserves attention, who fits, who is left out. And it does so with cold efficiency: without discussion, without explanation, without listening.

The Age Bias That Becomes Invisible

Age discrimination is rarely declared. Often, it is programmed. If a system learns from historical data—and those data reflect an ageist world—the algorithm can reproduce it with mathematical precision.

Sometimes the bias does not appear as “age,” but as a proxy: diagnoses, medication, sick-leave history, neighborhood, income level. Variables that seem neutral, but that can function as back doors for exclusion.

The typical effects are well known: models that assume age automatically equals lower learning capacity; systems that assign less value to prevention at advanced ages; tools that interpret fragility as destiny rather than as a reversible state; mechanisms that prioritize the “productive” without recognizing non-work contributions.

The problem is not only moral; it is practical. A long-lived society that automates prejudice becomes more unjust and more inept because it wastes capabilities, erodes trust, and multiplies the feeling of silent expulsion.

From the Hospital to City Hall… and to the Market

The debate is not limited to medicine. Algorithmic longevity reaches everyday life: digital procedures, the assignment of benefits, case prioritization, the organization of care. And also, the commercial sphere: insurance, credit, personalized offers that may segment by age in subtle ways.

Here a critical point appears: the divide is not only technological; it is interpretive. Who defines “vulnerability”? Which variables count? What weighs more: living alone, having a chronic illness, having lower income? If those decisions are automated without transparency, what looks like efficiency can become opacity.

And when the system is opaque, the person ages with less control over their own life.

The Right to Understand and the Right to Be Reviewed

In long-lived societies, it is not enough for a system to “work.” We need it to be legible. Longevity requires institutions that explain, not only process.

If an algorithm influences relevant decisions—health, dependency, access to resources—there should be a basic principle of democratic dignity: the right to understand why what is decided is decided. And another equally important one: the right for a person to review, correct, or nuance what a model suggests.

Social trust is not built with technology, but with transparency. And transparency is not a legal document: it is a culture.

Data Governance: Care, Not Extraction

At this point, the ethical question is unavoidable: are we using data to care, or to extract? When data becomes merchandise, longevity becomes a market. When data is treated as a public good, longevity can become well-being.

Good data governance should guarantee, at a minimum: real privacy, security, clear limits of use, bias audits, explainability, and social participation in criteria. This is not about stopping innovation but about preventing innovation from stopping us as citizens.

Longevity with Judgment

Data can help us anticipate fragility, design prevention, personalize care, and improve policies. But only if we keep one central idea: algorithms must serve life, not life serve algorithms.

Aging in a digital society should not mean becoming a profile. It should mean the opposite: having better tools to live with more autonomy, more justice, and more meaning.

Longevity, at its best, is not a “calculated” life. It is an understood life.
