Brain and cognitive reserve: the mind can be trained too

Forgetting a name, taking a little longer to find a word or walking into a room without immediately remembering why can trigger an unsettling suspicion: “Is it my age?”. We’ve learned to interpret any cognitive change as the announcement of an inevitable decline. As if the mind aged according to a countdown and each lapse erased a part of who we are.

But ageing does not mean stopping learning, understanding or creating. Some abilities change and certain tasks may require more time, but the mind is not a closed structure. It continues to respond to curiosity, experience, relationships and the environment. Learning to sustain it is not about chasing an impossible youth, but about keeping our relationship with the world open.

The myth of a mind that only loses

Culture often portrays cognitive ageing in a single direction: loss, slowness, forgetfulness. This narrative confuses common changes with disease and turns age into a diagnosis before any diagnosis exists.

Not every difficulty in remembering is serious deterioration. Nor do all people age cognitively in the same way. The trajectory depends on multiple factors: health, education, experiences, relationships, living conditions and opportunities to keep participating. Brain ageing exists, but it does not produce identical results nor does it automatically cancel the ability to learn.

The first exercise in cognitive health may be cultural: stop repeating that learning “is no longer for us”, that a technology “is too complicated”, or that certain curiosity “doesn’t fit that age”. Sometimes the door closes from the outside long before the mind stops wanting to cross it.

Cognitive reserve: margin, not armour

Cognitive reserve seeks to explain why people with similar brain changes can show different levels of functioning. It is not a pantry where neurons are stored for later use, nor an insurance policy against any disease. It is the ability to face changes through strategies, networks and processing styles that are more flexible or efficient.

It’s important to insist on the nuance: having greater reserve does not guarantee that pathology will never appear nor does it make anyone invulnerable. It provides margin. It helps explain why intellectual, social and cultural biography can influence how we respond to changes associated with time or illness.

Reserve is not built through an extraordinary act. It is nourished throughout life: studying, working, solving problems, relating to others, adapting to new situations and maintaining some form of meaningful challenge.

Curiosity keeps the world open

Learning doesn’t end when exams disappear. It may mean studying a language, using an app, following an unfamiliar route, cooking a different recipe, understanding a complex news story or asking a young person why they use a word that seems freshly landed from another planet.

What matters is not accumulating knowledge to prove competence. It is preserving the willingness to be surprised. Curiosity forces us to pay attention, connect information, ask questions and revise certainties.

It keeps us in dialogue with the present.

New and cognitively demanding activities can stimulate abilities such as memory and attention, although no single hobby offers guarantees against decline. What seems decisive is less about finding “the perfect exercise” and more about maintaining sustained, diverse and meaningful participation.
The mind doesn’t need to live in a sudoku gym with a stopwatch. It needs reasons to stay interested.

Reading, listening, talking

Reading is a silent activity, but it mobilises many abilities. It requires sustained attention, interpretation, imagination, anticipation and connecting the new with what we already know. Reading a novel, an essay or even a good article is not just receiving information: it is constructing meaning.

Music activates another way of relating to time. A melody can open memories, change mood, invite movement or connect people who do not share the same age. Listening to familiar music sustains continuity; discovering new music introduces surprise. Both experiences can coexist.

And then there is conversation, probably one of the most complete and least recognised cognitive exercises. Talking requires listening, interpreting tone, retrieving memories, responding, adapting language and understanding someone else’s point of view. When conversation crosses generations, it adds an especially valuable form of gymnastics: translating experiences between different worlds.

It’s not about talking for the sake of talking. It’s about continuing to have something to ask, something to tell and someone willing to listen.

The environment also thinks with us

We tend to present cognitive care as an individual responsibility: read more, learn something, stay active. But no mind develops isolated from its living conditions.

A nearby library, accessible cultural offerings, public transport, digital connectivity, meeting spaces and learning opportunities can expand the mental world. In contrast, isolation, technological barriers, lack of mobility or an environment that decides someone “no longer needs to learn” reduce stimulation and participation.

The same potential can unfold very differently depending on territory, income, available education or the strength of social ties. That’s why sustaining cognitive health is not only about recommending habits. It’s also about building societies that continue to offer questions, relationships and opportunities at every stage.

A university open to different ages, a neighbourhood cultural centre or an intergenerational programme are not mere recreational activities. They are infrastructures for cognitive and social participation.

The mind does not live separate from the body

The brain is part of the body, although we sometimes speak of it as if it floated elegantly above everything else. Sleep, physical activity, cardiovascular health, nutrition, hearing, vision and emotional well‑being influence the ability to pay attention, remember and participate.

Available evidence links general health care, movement, intellectual activity and social connection with healthier cognitive ageing, although more research is still needed to understand which interventions work, for whom and under what conditions.

That’s why “training the mind” cannot be reduced to solving exercises on a screen. It also means walking, sleeping, talking, listening well, treating illness, going outside and keeping reasons to participate.

The body opens or closes cognitive possibilities. And the environment can help keep them open.

Preventing without blaming

There is a risk in all discourses about healthy habits: turning prevention into a new form of guilt. If someone develops cognitive deterioration, it does not mean they read too little, talked poorly or lacked willpower. Illnesses are not moral exams.

Nor has everyone had the same opportunities. A life marked by exhausting work, low schooling, poverty, isolation or limited access to culture does not offer the same conditions to build cognitive reserve as one full of stimulation and security.

Speaking honestly about prevention requires acknowledging these limits. We can foster abilities, reduce some risks and create better conditions. We cannot guarantee outcomes nor individually blame those who become ill.

Cognitive reserve should not become a cultural privilege later presented as personal merit. It should be a shared possibility: lifelong education, accessible culture, active communities and early support when difficulties arise.

Continuing to learn is continuing to participate

Learning is not only useful for maintaining abilities. It allows us to remain part of the present. Those who understand a new technology can communicate with others. Those who participate in public conversation retain the ability to influence. Those who pass on a craft or a story turn their experience into shared heritage.

The mind is better sustained when it has a world. When there is something to interpret, someone to exchange it with and a reason to stay involved.

In long‑lived societies, learning should not be organised as a stage concentrated at the beginning of life, but as a permanent possibility. Not to force us into endless updating — we already have enough passwords — but to prevent age from functioning as a cultural border.

The best defence against the myth of inevitable decline is not denying that losses exist. It is recognising that there is also adaptation, experience, plasticity, judgement and the ability to keep growing.

Training the mind is not turning life into an exam. It is keeping open the doors through which curiosity, conversation, music, learning and others enter.
