Ageing well and optimising all possibilities

Society is facing a global ageing process resulting from a progressive increase in life expectancy and a reduction in birth rates. This generates an alteration of the population pyramids and, as a result, has important social and economic consequences. The progressive increase in the population over 65 years of age has become a determining factor in the European and world social panorama.

Faced with this new scenario, CENIE seeks to raise awareness and sensitise all the actors in the social fabric to the need to carry out a cultural change, based on greater knowledge that will enable us to age well and optimise all the possibilities arising from scientific and technological advances. In this sense, we have established collaboration agreements with academic institutions and research centres that are marking the frontier of knowledge in multiple areas, from behavioural economics to genetics and from behavioural science to social psychology, among others.

What are we doing to realise our purpose?

  • We work to respond to the phenomenon of longevity and to translate these efforts into improved well-being and a more inclusive, inclusive and sustainable society.
  • We generate knowledge and develop a new narrative to explore the more meaningful concept of longevity, identifying the steps needed to improve the quality of the entire life cycle.
  • We aspire that through knowledge generation we will become a society prepared for longer lives and be able to address and respond to the inequalities and gaps that still exist.
  • We want to influence the development of policies that promote healthy, active and dignified longevity. This includes conducting research, identifying needs and challenges, and generating recommendations. With our experience we foster collaboration between researchers, public institutions, trade unions and employers.
  • We seek a model that improves quality of life, within the framework of an inclusive and inclusive society and a sustainable Welfare State.
  • We analyse alternatives to promote healthy ageing, strengthening preventive care in our public health systems.
  • We work to respond to unwanted loneliness and social isolation.
  • We maintain close contact with national and international universities and research centres of the highest prestige in the different disciplines involved in the study of long-lived societies.
  • We promote the exchange of experiences between the world's most renowned universities in the study of longevity, through close collaboration with the leading experts and benchmarks in their respective areas of research.
  • We lead the Forum on Longevity and Longevity Societies, a proposal to generate a global strategy on the subject that favours the exchange of knowledge between the main actors in the academic world in the Portuguese-Spanish-American space.

We are convinced that it is time to change attitudes to ageing, to recognise the opportunities rather than the problems, and to promote cultural change. In this way we can help people to live longer, more active and independent lives, and also help our societies to take advantage of the opportunities inherent in rapidly ageing societies.

In conclusion, CENIE aims to generate a global and multidisciplinary vision of the new societies that are emerging. In order to achieve this objective, we carry out the following particular actions:

  • In order to contribute to scientific excellence, we carry out a series of research projects with the aim of identifying issues and problems associated with ageing and promoting research in these fields. These projects are carried out in collaboration with national and international centres or entities that are at the forefront in these fields of research. In addition, the exchange between universities and companies is promoted to strengthen the strategic sector of ageing and to facilitate the design and development of innovative products and solutions that improve the quality of life of the elderly.
  • In order to promote actions that deepen a better understanding of the phenomenon of ageing from a multidisciplinary perspective, a series of virtual and face-to-face actions are developed to share the knowledge of national or international experts and thus create environments of excellence where professionals from different disciplines can understand ageing in a global way and at the same time with the particularities of their own areas of specialisation.
  • Design and implementation of innovative models based on social integration and the promotion of social and economic opportunities that take into account the specific characteristics of ageing communities. This promotes projects that develop innovative ideas that meet the social challenges posed by ageing, becoming models of excellence and reference.
