Conversations in Salamanca: understanding the Ageing process Chapter I: Aubrey De Grey with Iñaki López

Conversaciones en Salamanca: comprendiendo el envejecimiento Capítulo I: Aubrey de Grey con Iñaki López

The ageing of the population is about to become one of the most significant social transformations of the 21st century, with consequences for almost all sectors of society, among them, the labor and financial market and the demand for goods and services (housing , transport, social protection ...), as well as for the family structure and intergenerational ties.

According to data from the 2017 revision of the World Population Outlook report, it is expected that the number of older people, that is, those 60 years old or more, will double by 2050 and triple by 2100: it will increase from 962 million in 2017 to 2100 million in 2050 and 3100 million in 2100. Worldwide, this population group grows faster than those of younger people.

A change in attitude, policies and practices at all levels is necessary to take advantage of the enormous potential of the elderly in the 21st century

This is the main objective of the cycle of dialogues that make up "Conversations in Salamanca: understanding the ageing process".

Understanding aging through the knowledge of those experts, national and international, who with their research and reflections are shaping the scientific avant-garde, will favor the ability to find answers to new challenges and new opportunities, will allow to adapt the range of services aimed at the elderly and, above all, we will expand our knowledge on a subject that will be part of the priorities in the coming years and decades.

Chapter I of "Conversations in Salamanca: understanding the ageing process" is carried out by the scientist Aubrey de Grey, biomedical gerontologist, Scientific Director of SENS Research Foundation, a biomedical research charity based in California, which carries out and finances dedicated laboratory investigations to combat the aging process.

In this chapter is the journalist Iñaki López, presenter of the debate programme "La Sexta Noche", who talks with Aubrey de Grey.
