Generate evidence to live longer and better

g

The presentation event of IBERLONGEVA in Bragança highlighted the need to generate data and scientific evidence in a territory marked by geographical dispersion and an ageing population. The meeting brought together institutional representatives, researchers and the academic community around the importance of better understanding the factors that influence healthy longevity.

Isabel Ferreira, President of the Bragança City Council, stressed that low population density and the vastness of the territory increase the vulnerability and isolation of many older people, making it essential to bring people, services and community closer together. Óscar Benito, Director of the General Foundation of the University of Salamanca, underlined that the life trajectories and experiences of older adults are a key source of learning for designing better public policies.

From the scientific field, Tiago Barbosa, Director of the LiveWell research centre at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, pointed out the need to identify which factors (health, diet, activity, lifestyle) influence a higher quality of life. Meanwhile, Olívia Pereira, Director of the School of Health of the IPB, explained that the study turns the territory into a true living laboratory for applied research and knowledge transfer.

Juan Martín, Director of CENIE, reminded the audience that every decision made throughout life influences how we age, and that it is never too late to make good decisions. The event concluded with remarks from Hélder Fernandes, coordinator of the IBERLONGEVA project at the IPB, who highlighted the importance of collecting data and scientific evidence where none previously existed, calling for cross-border collaboration and citizen participation.
